Welcome to FCI Connect

From the desk of our Executive Director

A strong governance board is one of the most important foundations of a successful school. Effective boards provide strategic direction, uphold accountability, ensure sound stewardship of resources, and keep the organization’s mission at the center of every decision. When governance is strong, school leaders are empowered to focus on what matters most, creating high-quality educational opportunities and positive outcomes for students. Strong boards also foster transparency, build community trust, and help schools navigate challenges while maintaining a clear vision for the future.

Governance is not simply about oversight; it is about leadership, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence. The most effective boards continuously invest in learning, engage in meaningful dialogue, and seek opportunities to strengthen their knowledge and effectiveness. By doing so, they create the conditions necessary for schools to innovate, grow, and serve their communities well.

This commitment to continuous improvement was on full display at the 2026 Florida Charter Institute Governance Conference. The event brought together board members, school leaders, governance professionals, and education partners from across the state for a day dedicated to professional growth, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas. Attendees benefited from an insightful keynote presentation by Dr. Richard Seigler-Carter, engaging sessions led by experienced practitioners, and valuable discussions focused on strengthening governance practices and leadership capacity.

The conference also highlighted the power of partnerships. We are grateful to the many sponsors, presenters, and organizations whose support made the event possible, as well as to Cornerstone Charter Academy for its outstanding hospitality. Special recognition is due to Christine Mentis of Building Hope for her exceptional leadership and dedication in coordinating a truly impactful event.

Most importantly, we celebrate the educators, board members, and school leaders who dedicated their time to learning and growing together. Your commitment to excellence in governance strengthens schools, supports student success, and advances the mission of public charter education across Florida.

Thank you for making the 2026 Florida Charter Institute Governance Conference a tremendous success. We look forward to building on this momentum as we continue working together to strengthen governance, elevate leadership, and positively impact the students and communities we serve.

Earlier this month, the federal government released regulations for the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (FSTC). This new federal program, which will become available in January 2027, allows individuals to claim a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations to Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGO). Florida has already opted into the program. FSTC is not just designed to benefit private schools, however. In fact, public schools, including charter schools, are eligible to receive services like tutoring. To learn how your school can benefit, contact partnering SGOs like Step Up For Students. For a detailed explanation of the program, see this article from the Learning Policy Institute.
