Florida statute allows higher education institutions (HEI) to authorize charter schools. Both state universities and college system institutions can submit an application to the Department of Education to be allowed to solicit applications and sponsor charter schools within the state.  Universities are allowed to authorize statewide, whereas colleges are allowed to authorize charters within its service area.

Miami Dade College

The mission of Miami Dade College is: As democracy’s college, Miami Dade College changes lives through accessible, high-quality teaching and learning experiences. The College embraces its responsibility to serve as the economic, cultural and civic leader for the advancement of our diverse global community.  The vision is: To be the recognized leader in student learning, achievement and success while enriching our community.  The goal of our charter school efforts is to ensure that every student has a path to the American Dream and is supported throughout it.

Miami Dade College only accepts charter applications when we release a Request For Proposals. RFP’s will be posted here on the Florida Charter Institute website. 

Pasco Hernando State College

The mission of PHSC is to be a comprehensive, learning centered institution, serving its communities by providing an excellent, affordable and accessible education, enabling students to achieve success, personal enrichment, socio-economic advancement and social impact. The College currently has an enrollment of 9500 students attending classes in six service areas. PHSC offers over seventy career programs and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate and associate degrees. PHSC’s efforts to sponsor charter school are intended offer additional, high-quality educational options for the communities located in the two PHSC service areas.

Pasco Hernando State College only accepts charter applications when a Request for Proposals are issued.  RFPs will be posted here on the Florida Charter Institute website, and the college partners with the FCI to review charter applications.

Tallahassee State College

Tallahassee State College (TSC) aims to provide an accessible, student-centered learning environment for success in a global economy, focusing on workforce training, seamless educational pathways, and community partnerships to boost economic mobility and student achievement. Their core mission involves high-quality programs, strategic collaborations with K-12, universities, and businesses, and leveraging resources for institutional strength, all to become a premier college of choice.  

Tallahassee State College was the first Florida college authorized to sponsor charter schools in Florida, and opened the first college sponsored charter school, Tallahassee  Collegiate Academy.
