This session provided participants with an introduction to the critical importance of exceptional student education (ESE) compliance for charter schools. Lindsey Granger outlined how schools must balance the delivery of quality services with adherence to federal, state, and local requirements, noting that compliance frameworks are essential for protecting student rights and avoiding costly corrective actions. She highlighted key areas of focus for boards and leaders, including documentation, communication, and oversight of service delivery.
A major highlight of the session was the introduction of the Florida Charter Institute’s new ESE Compliance Tool, designed to help schools monitor and refine their practices. Granger demonstrated how the tool can serve as a guide for evaluating current programming, identifying gaps, and ensuring that policies and practices align with IDEA and state mandates. By using the tool as part of their ongoing compliance activities, schools can both strengthen special education services for students and remain confident in their legal and operational obligations.
