It is important that a charter school governing board is actively monitoring school data. Reviewing student data empowers the governing board to fulfill its oversight responsibilities effectively in the following areas:

Accountability
  • Performance Monitoring: Data allows the board to hold school leaders accountable for student outcomes, ensuring that the school is meeting its educational goals and obligations.
  • Transparency: Regular data reviews promote transparency with stakeholders, including parents, staff, and the community.
Informed Decision-Making
  • Strategic Planning: Analyzing student data helps the board make informed decisions about resource allocation, program development, and curriculum changes.
Supporting Student Achievement
  • Interventions: Understanding student data enables the board to support targeted interventions for struggling students, ensuring that all students receive the help they need.
  • Setting Goals: Data provides a foundation for setting measurable goals for student achievement, which can drive school improvement efforts.
Assessing Program Effectiveness
  • Evaluating Curriculum: The board can assess the effectiveness of educational programs and teaching strategies based on student performance data.
  • Targeted Support: By understanding the needs of various subgroups, the board can advocate for resources and programs that support all students.
Compliance and Reporting
  • Regulatory Requirements: Charter schools often have specific accountability measures they must meet. Regular data reviews help ensure compliance with district, state and federal regulations.
  • Performance Contracts: The governing board can evaluate whether the school is meeting the benchmarks outlined in its charter agreement.
The following are questions the governing board should consider when discussing and developing policies and procedures that guide the day-to day operations of the school:

Data Collection and Analysis

  • What systems or tools are you using to collect and analyze student data?
  • How often is student performance data reviewed and updated?
  • What methods are in place to ensure data accuracy and reliability?

Accountability and Progress Monitoring

  • What benchmarks are set for student performance, and how are we monitoring progress towards these goals?
  • How do we hold teachers accountable for student performance data?

Community Engagement

  • How are we communicating student performance data to stakeholders (parents, community, etc.)?

The following are guiding questions governing board members can ask school leaders around school data after each assessment period.  It is helpful to provide these questions ahead of time, so that the school leader can prepare appropriate responses and presentations to share with the board during the upcoming board meeting.

Student Performance

What trends are you seeing in student academic performance data this year compared to previous years?
How do our students’ test scores compare to district and state averages?
What specific groups of students (e.g., by grade level, special education status, or demographic) are showing improvement, and which are not?

Response to Data

How is the data being used to inform instructional strategies and interventions?
Can you provide examples of changes made in curriculum or teaching based on student data?
What professional learning is being offered to staff to help them effectively use student data? Are there budget implications for these initiatives?

Student Engagement and Support

What initiatives are in place to support struggling students identified through data analysis?
How are we engaging families in understanding and supporting their child’s performance data?
What are the current attendance rates and what correlation can be made between attendance rate and student achievement data?

These questions can help the governing board understand how effectively the school is utilizing student data to enhance educational outcomes and support overall school improvement.
